A need for preserving and developing Karate
Sekishin Karate Jutsu is born as a response to two necessities within the martial world of today.
We are a small organisation.
We are not interested in growing large, but in creating a context of learning and training.
Our goal is to provide an alternative in response to the transformation of Karate Do into a combat sport.
That process has reached such extremes, that even traditional styles see sports competition as a natural extension of the study of Karate Do.
The problem with this is that it results in a conceptual pauperization of Karate Do as a martial art, as it limits the practitioners' martial vision to the realm of uke, tsuki and keri and thus precludes a deep understanding of the information contained in the katas. The notion of maai, the understanding of timing and rhythm, etc. everything is tinted by the sport context. The bunkai of the kata presented by the traditional schools, is usually composed of defenses against basic techniques (kihon), usually rectilinear, at an inadequate distance and tactically faulted.
Another result of Karate’s transformation into a combat sport that contributes to its martial and conceptual impoverishment is that this sports activity, like any activity of high competitive level, necessitates a training methodology and specialized training, which has little or nothing to do with the original martial context of Karate Do, or with the reality of today's urban violence.
The SKJ aims to create a space of study and martial practice that transcends styles and is completely disassociated from combat sports.
Second, the SKJ aims to create a context, not only of study, but of applied and sincere martial practice. A context, where reality and tradition go hand in hand. A place to apply what we learn in the study of the traditional kata that we carry out in our respective ryu.
That is why the SKJ is aimed at advanced practitioners of all styles who are looking for a place to explore, study and investigate an applied version of what they do in their original style.
The SKJ does not try to supplant traditional styles, but aims to create a space of expression and research parallel to traditional styles. Thus, it is not necessary to stop training and study a traditional ryu to participate in SKJ training, on the contrary, the intention is for the SKJ to open a door to a deeper understanding of traditional styles.
The training of SKJ aims to ensure effectiveness, to put content to a form that has been studied to the point of exhaustion, to transcend the kihon and transform it into a real, pure, living and sincere technique.
A technique based on bunkai and applied in situations where complacency is not necessary, nor the cooperation of uke to make it work. A technique that aspires to become what it once was.
A sincere technique.
Sekishin means sincerity.
That's what we aim for.
